I believe in Santa Clause
So, we sent the customary Christmas email to Santa Clause, like we always do on December 1st. But 9-year-old Nathan is now at the age where he seriously doubts that Santa is real, but instead is just mum & dad putting presents under the tree. He asked us about this the other night, and I found myself struggling to find the right answer, and at the time I said of course Santa is real! But, after giving it some thought, this is what I would have liked to say to him.
The answer is NO. Mum & dad are not Santa. We are the people who fill your stocking and put presents for you and your sister under the tree, just as our parents did for us, and you will do for your kids someday in the future. This doesn’t make us Santa though. Santa is lots and lots of people who keep the spirit of Christmas alive. Santa is the magic and spirit of giving to others. He teaches children to believe in something they can’t see or touch, and throughout life you will need this capacity to believe in yourself, and in your family and friends. Santa is the spirit of believing.
With hearts full of love, people like mum & dad and other people whose hearts he has filled with joy, help to do a job that would otherwise be impossible! So, no we are not Santa. Santa is love and magic, hope and happiness. We are just on his team. And now, big boy, you are too. It’s important to keep this magic alive and now that you understand, it’s up to you to give the gift of believing in Santa to your little sister and all other little kids you meet.
